Fall in Park City is a hidden gem, even if you’ve visited during other seasons. With golden aspen forests, cozy local spots, and festive fall events, it’s the perfect time for a weekend getaway. If you live within a few hours, an overnight staycation lets you fully enjoy crisp mountain mornings with a warm coffee in hand—setting the perfect tone for a day of exploring, without ever rushing to the car.
The Mountains Turn into a Golden Wonderland
There’s something magical about the way Park City’s alpine landscapes shift from green to gold, before turning white. The hillsides are covered in aspens, which put on a show every fall with leaves that seem to glow in shades of yellow, orange, and red. One of the best ways to soak it all in is by hitting the trails.
Hiking and Biking:
- Guardsman Pass offers sweeping views that’ll make you feel like you’re in the middle of a postcard. Be sure to check out the Bonanza Loop Trail (BLT) that opened in August 2024 and become an immediate classic. Stay tuned for our full review of this gem at 9k feet.
- Mid Mountain Trail is the classic that cuts across the upper elevations of Park City. How to do it:
- Stay at the Montage, Deer Valley and walk right out your door. Keep in mind cyclists that this is where you’ll see the most foot traffic so keep it chill around here.
- Take a lift – jump on Crescent Chair Lift from Park City Mountain Resort. On a bike or foot take Keystone up to Shadow like for a true alpine loop. Be sure to grab a map (thanks Mountain Trails) so you can optimize your route based on your exploration method of heels or wheels.
- Wasatch Crest Trail
- To do it like a local you need to ride to the top. Ride from your hotel or park at Park City Mountain, and traverse over to Armstrong trail (directional, up-only with a few bail-out points). Take Armstrong Trail to Pinecone and continue the climb to the top. The entire up-uproute is between ~one and a half to two hours depending on your fitness. Take in the views at the top of Brighton and Solitude resorts down in Big Cottonwood Canyon. From here ride North and follow the Crest before dropping back into the Canyons area of PCMR.
- If you’re shorter on time but still want the climb, head down Puke Hill and whistle at those grinding up, then link into Shadow Lake area and pick one of the many great descents down Park City Mountain to the base.
Pro tip: October is prime time for fall foliage, but it’s also the sweet spot before winter weather sets in. Get here early to catch the color change in full swing. On that note, if the weather has even a slight chance of precipitation, toss a light shell in your pack. You won’t regret having it, but you would regret not having it if you need it.
A Food Scene You Can’t Miss
Fall in Park City also means it’s time to eat and drink in a way that matches the season. Park City’s restaurants slow down a bit after the summer rush, making it easier to snag a reservation at some of the hottest spots without a long wait.
Local favorites that are perfect for Fall:
- Riverhorse on Main for an upscale dinner.
- Five5eeds (Pronounced Five Seeds) if you need a brunch fix that’ll fuel your outdoor adventures – get the Shakshouka and the fancy latte of your choice, art included.
- Coffee on the go In a rush, drive through one of the only coffee huts at Silver King (same parking lot as Five5eeds)
- High West continues to be a staple for tourists and locals alike. You must be 21 to enter, and once you do get the High West Lemonade to sip a signature cocktail and savor the last feeling of summer.
The Quiet Before the Ski Season Storm
One of the biggest perks of visiting Park City in the fall? It’s peaceful. Whether you’re strolling down historic Main Street or enjoying a crisp afternoon at Deer Valley Cafe, fall offers a calm that’s hard to find in the winter hustle or summer buzz.
Without the pressure of ski season or jam-packed summer events, you can take your time exploring. Visit the Park City Museum, especially if you have kids ~10 or under. Or hit up one of the art galleries—places that can get crowded during peak season. And while the weather’s still cool but comfortable, it’s a great time to dive into the town’s history or shop the boutique stores on Main Street without elbowing your way through a crowd which absolutely becomes the case. If you are within driving distance bring your dog, they are welcome nearly everywhere in our town (but confirm with your hotel of course).
Craft Brews and Fall Festivals
The fall months bring a laid-back, festive vibe to Park City. While it may not be Oktoberfest in Munich (but we do suggest the one at nearby Snowbird!), our local breweries and distilleries are happy to fill that seasonal craving. Visit Top of Main (formally Wasatch Brew Pub) or Old Town Cellars for a fall inspired beer or just one of our favorite glasses of wine.
Speaking of wine, don’t miss out on the Park City Wine Festival, (October 3-5, 2024) where you can sample wines, spirits, and food pairings while soaking up the crisp mountain air.
Autumn Adventures for Families
If you’re traveling with little ones (or just want to tap into your inner kid), fall is the perfect time for a family getaway to Park City. Alongside classic activities like visiting Utah Olympic Park, where zip lining, bobsled rides, and freestyle pool shows offer a thrill, there’s a more laid-back fall experience waiting at Park City Gardens.
Fall Happenings at Park City Gardens:
From the end of September through October, Park City Gardens is the ultimate autumn destination and very often overlooked at its longtime spot on Hwy 224. Swing by for their Pumpkin Patch and Haunted Forest—two favorite seasonal activities for locals and visitors alike. Wander through the spooky (but not too spooky) Haunted Forest, which is open all month long and free to enjoy. While the Haunted Forest won’t cost you a dime, donations for the Utah Food Bank are encouraged and much appreciated.
Mark your calendar for their Fall Celebration on Friday, October 11th, from 1-5 PM. This festive event features live bluegrass music from Trashmoon Collective (2-4 PM), delicious treats, and pumpkin vouchers, courtesy of local sponsors Engel & Völkers. With local makers and other surprises popping up, it’s a perfect outing for the entire family.
If you’re feeling crafty, Park City Gardens is also hosting a workshop on Designing with Dried Florals on Wednesday, October 23rd at 5:00 PM. Grab a friend and get ready to create a stunning, dried floral arrangement that will last throughout the season. The workshop includes all materials, instruction, light bites, and drinks. Sign up here.
When you’re done exploring, don’t miss the chance to relax at the Garden Café, where you can sip on coffee and soak in the fall vibes. The Gardens’ charming nursery and boutique are open daily, giving you ample opportunity to bring home a little autumn magic for yourself.
Fall Hours:
- Nursery & Greenhouse: 9-5 Monday-Saturday; 10-5 Sunday
- Boutique and Flower Barn: 10-5 Daily
- Garden Café: 7-5 Daily
