Our Top 10 Canyons Village Tips

  1. Canyons Village offers three true ski-in/ski-out properties that we thoroughly recommend: Sundial Lodge, Hyatt Centric Park City, and the Grand Summit Hotel. For a complete list of our favorite ski-in/ski-out hotels be sure to visit our best ski-in/ski-out hotels page.
  2. If you want to save a few bucks while staying very close to the base, consider Silverado Lodge or Hyatt Place Park City. Silverado Lodge is just a hundred yards or so to the base, and priced much more conservatively than its ski-in/ski-out counterparts. Hyatt Place is brand new, less than a mile from the base, and offers great value and general access.
  3. If you don't mind spending some of your kids’ college savings, a stay at the Waldorf Astoria is well worth the splurge. It's one of our absolute favorite hotels in Park City. The contemporary feel, beautiful rooms, swanky bar, and the best pool in Park City make this property a real treat.
  4. When skiing on the weekends, avoid the Canyons Village base area between 10 a.m. – noon, when the crowds and lines are a bit overwhelming. Seemingly everyone is trying to get up the mountain right then. As soon as you get past this bottleneck, the crowds spread out across the mountain and everything settles down.
  5. Eat at Cloud Dine, our staff pick for best On-Mountain Dining. This is not your typical, greasy, on-mountain fare. Enjoy gourmet made-to-order salads, incredible wood-fired pizzas, artisan burgers, and incredible fries with four dipping sauces; all made fresh. Arrive before noon and indulge in one of their incredible homemade doughnuts, which sell out most days. Due to popularity, this place becomes chaotic if you arrive between noon and 1:30 p.m
  6. Eat at Lookout Cabin, another of our staff pics for On-Mountain Dining. While it's great anytime, the best time for a visit is on a warm spring ski day, or at least a sunny day. While you are there, you can enjoy the incredible scenery from the deck. The food is top notch, and is far from overpriced resort food. While there are all sorts of incredible seafood and salad options, the burger is to die for. Plus, there's a full bar. Reservations are highly recommended.
  7. Treat yourself to dinner at The Farm, located at the base of the resort. Incredible farm to table dining never tasted so good. The chef utilizes a seasonally adjusted menu based on what's fresh and local. It is served by an excellent bar and great vibe.
  8. The best après ski scene in all of Park City is centered around the Umbrella Bar in Canyons Village. The small, glass-enclosed 360-degree bar is surrounded by outdoor seating with fire pits. Live music during spring season makes this the après ski spot to be.
  9. While we love skiing at Park City Mountain, and do so often, be sure to spend a day at Deer Valley, where you'll greatly enjoy the uncrowded slopes, great service, and incredible on-mountain food options. Also, don't shy away from spending a day at Snowbasin, Snowbird or Alta. With so many world-class resorts in and around Park City, it pays to explore a bit.
  10. You'll obviously spend time in downtown Park City. There's lots for us to share regarding Old Town and Main Street, so be sure to visit our Park City Essentials page and How to do Main Street right page.

The Local Scoop on Canyons Village

What is Canyons Village? Canyons Village is the second base area of Park City Mountain, a typical resort village consisting mostly hotels, restaurants and apres options. Most of the buildings and properties are newer, giving the whole area a fresh, polished vibe mirrored by the high energy found in the village during popular travel seasons. Almost all the buildings in the area are focused entirely around the activity in the village, whether that means lodging, food, rentals, or other services. While not as secluded as Deer Valley, there are fewer ancillary activities and attractions in Canyons Village itself, and you may find yourself taking trips into the downtown or Kimball Junction areas to round out your stay. Located about 3-4 miles from Old Town and Main Street, Canyons Village is technically located in the area of town known as Snyderville. Almost any property you choose will be fairly recently constructed and on the upper side of quality.

Lodging

Other than the proximity to excellent skiing, staying in Canyons Village comes with the additional benefit of being a bit more cost-effective than staying right in town. If you want a newer, high-quality accommodation for less, while staying close to the slopes, Canyons Village is the place for you.

There are three ski-in/ski-out properties, in particular, that stand out as excellent experiences at a great value. Sundial Lodge is a comfortable, high-quality lodge with excellent amenities right on the plaza, and is a perfect choice for those wanting a taste of luxury at a reasonable price. For the relaxation-minded traveler, the Grand Summit Hotel is an excellent choice. Between the pool, spa, health club, and childcare, the Grand Summit is guaranteed to ease your mind and refresh your body. Hyatt Centric Park City sticks with the relaxation, putting robes and slippers into your bathroom even, and also manages to cater to the guest on the go with flexible on-site options for meals and refreshments. For more on these properties and all of our favorite ski-in/ski-out hotels, be sure to visit our best ski-in/ski-out hotels page.

There are other options outside of that little list, but you certainly can’t go wrong with any of them. For outright luxury, we love the Waldorf Astoria, our staff pic for best Design, Pool, and Pet Friendly. It’s billed as ski-in/ski-out, but that’s a bit of a stretch. You have to take a gondola to the base, which doesn’t quite qualify in our book. Nevertheless, it is easy and quick access, so we give them a pass. The price may be high, but it is definitely right. You get everything you pay for and more, but the sticker shock is real.

Hyatt Place Park City and Silverado Lodge are ski-in/ski-out, but are both quality properties priced much lower than their slightly more convenient counterparts. If you don’t mind hiking an extra hundred yards to the slopes, the savings are well worth the effort.

The Slopes

Canyons Village is one of two base areas serving Park City Mountain. The unified resort is the result of the merging of the former Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons Resort, resulting in the single largest resort in the country. Canyons Village Base Area enjoys several benefits as a result of this unification. The foremost of these is that Canyons Village is less crowded than the downtown base area. You are likely to spend less time waiting around and more time enjoying the less-crowded slopes. There are caveats, however. Between 10 a.m. — noon on most weekdays and a significant portion of the weekend, the lifts are packed. The bottlenecking gets very serious, and you may have to deal with some grumpy customers. It is better to avoid the “rush hour” if you can, though it won’t destroy your trip if you happen into a busy period or two. The central area of the slopes stays crowded: Tombstone Express, Saddleback Express, and the beginner chair High Meadow. Avoid these areas by heading left or right for excellent conditions and no lift lines.

If you get hungry on the slopes, we suggest taking advantage of the delicious Cloud Dine, our pick for best On-Mountain Dining, and Lookout Cabin. The former can be subject to lunchtime crowding, so plan accordingly. You should try both while you visit, if at all possible.

The Atmosphere

Canyons Village feels like a resort, which isn’t a bad thing. It puts travelers in mind of the beautiful landscapes, amazing skiing, and relaxing leisure to be enjoyed during each stay. Hitting the slopes, walking around the plaza, sampling restaurants and shops, and taking advantage of relaxing amenities all contribute to the feeling of being away from it all. Having the best apres ski scene in Park City certainly doesn’t hurt anything, nor does the live music performed in the plaza during the warmer months.

The Final Word

Less crowded and more affordable than its cousin, Park City Base Area, Canyons Village makes a great destination for those wanting to take advantage of the largest ski resort in the United States without having to deal with the hassle and expense of staying downtown. With plenty of newer, nicer properties, you won’t be disappointed with the many convenient options surrounding the plaza at the heart of the village, even if you find yourself having to walk a few yards to get there. There is plenty to do, but the rest of Park City is only five minutes away whenever you feel like heading out on an adventure.

Sitting between downtown Park City proper and Kimball Junction, Canyons Village gives you options. You can stay where you are in the Snyderville area, or quickly and easily take off in either (or both) directions for even more amazing adventures.

Where to eat

Here are a few of our favorites in the Canyons Village area, on-mountain, and in the surrounding area. And, of course, you can always head into downtown for nearly unlimited options. Don't hesitate, however, to go the opposite direction to Kimball Junction, where you can find plenty of our favorite dining options, including where locals are more likely to go, at a fraction of the price: Vessel Kitchen, Sushi Blue, Maxwell's, and Red Rock Brewery.

Summer vs Winter

Summer in the Canyons Village area is the perfect picture of warm alpine living. Set back a short distance from the main highway, Canyons Village enjoys a peaceful atmosphere, cooler temperatures, and endless natural splendor. The hills and valleys surrounding Canyons Village are full of beautiful paths to master for both hikers and bikers. Get into nature and explore serene surroundings, or head back into the Village area for fun events like free summer concerts or the long-running farmers market. And, if you aren’t content to stay in the immediate area, all of Park City’s warm-weather fun is available to you, just a short drive away.
